Myths about logistics

Many people know very little about logistics and are often mistaken about the truth of certain facts about it. Today on LLC «FabriQuanta» blog we're going to talk about some of the myths associated with the field.
Speed of delivery
Want to organise a quick delivery? Then road transport is not for you. This is the opinion of people who are far away from logistics. Yes, if we consider transport from point A to point B in a vacuum, that is, without taking into account possible factors influencing the process, then of course the fastest mode of transport is air transport. But we do not live in a vacuum and, like everything we do, we are affected by many things. For air freight, these factors include flight schedules, the availability of cargo space, the load on the aircraft, and the availability of airports at origin and destination.

It should also be remembered that airlines provide their services from the departure airport to the arrival airport, and the rest is handled by logistics companies: they organise road transport to the departure airport, deliver the cargo to the terminal, the terminal pays all ground costs at the airports and organises road transport from the arrival airport to the unloading point. Without the involvement of road transport, you are unlikely to be able to use air freight. The conclusion is that there will be a different fastest way for each individual task.
Logistics is just about delivering goods
Many people think that logistics is just about getting goods from point A to point B. This is an overly generalised view of the field. In fact, logistics professionals are involved in planning, organising, coordinating and controlling all stages of product delivery, from planning the purchase of raw materials to the delivery of goods to the end consumer. Logistics is:
  • Supply;
  • Warehousing;
  • Inventory management;
  • Transportation;
  • Packaging;
  • Distribution;
  • Reverse logistics.
Logistics also ensures
  • optimal use of resources;
  • minimise costs;
  • reduce delivery times;
  • improved customer service;
  • increased business efficiency.
Does size matter?
The bigger the logistics company, the better the service. According to this stereotype, a larger company employs only professional staff, offers a wide range of services, their high quality and an individual approach to each customer.

But this is not always the case. Of course, the size of the organisation you entrust with your freight is important. A small company with 5-10 employees, for example, has far fewer resources and opportunities to provide transport services in a large number of directions using different types of transport. On the other hand, large companies may suffer from bureaucracy and rigid hierarchical procedures: it is necessary to collect a large number of documents, coordinate them with their manager, lawyers, security service and so on. This can make it difficult to provide a fast and efficient service to clients, whereas small businesses, due to their mobility and practicality, can provide a high quality service quickly.

It is important to recognise that there is no direct correlation between the size of a company and the quality of its service. In each case, it is necessary to proceed on the basis of what your business needs at the time.
